 W. Michael Gear was born in Colorado Springs in 1955. As a teenager living in Fort Collins, he spent his summers volunteering on local ranches. His first job consisted of cleaning up human refuse, but after getting his masters in Physical Anthropology from Colorado State, he turned to studying ancient human refuse, which was significantly more agreeable.
Gear worked as a field archaeologist for Western Wyoming College before co-founding Pronghorn Anthropological Associates. Archaeology being a very seasonal career, Gear found himself with a lot of time on his hands in the off-season. He was inspired, one January, to write his first novel out of annoyance with the glaring inaccuracies of a historical novel he was reading. His initial work was over 500 pages long--and served as a wonderful warm-up exercise.
In the interim, he met his wife, Kathleen O'Neal Gear. In 1986, the two decided on a change of scenery and moved into a cabin (without running water) where they spent the next three years in a frenzy of writing. Michael has now written more than 20 novels on his own, and co-written 37 more with Kathleen.
Gear writes everything from historical and pre-historical fiction to science fiction to thrillers, and he loves to incorporate anthropologically theory into his writing. One of his novels, Morning River, was submitted for the Pulitzer prize in fiction, and the National Book Award in 1998.
The Gears now live on a gorgeous bison ranch in rural Wyoming.
