VJ Books Presents Author Michael Koryta (aka Scott Carson)!

Author Michael KorytaMichael Koryta (aka Scott Carson) is a New York Times bestselling author of 14 novels. His work has been praised by Stephen King, Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Lisa Unger, Dean Koontz, James Patterson, Dennis Lehane, Laura Lippman, Daniel Woodrell, and Sandra Brown among many others.

Typically a crime fiction writer, when it comes to telling supernatural stories, Koryta writes under the pen name Scott Carson. He says handing the ghost stories off to another name helps him sleep better at night. Plus it fulfills a lifelong fantasy: having a name that could be easily spelled and pronounced.

His latest Scott Carson novel, Where They Wait, is just such a supernatural novel. An atmospheric and haunting thriller perfect for our times, the novel centers around a sinister mindfulness app with fatal consequences. A recently laid-off war correspondent takes a job writing a profile for the new app, called Clarity. It seems like easy money, but things quickly go awry when he listens to the app’s “Sleep Songs.” A woman’s hauntingly beautiful voice sings a ballad that is anything but soothing—it’s disturbing, really, more of a warning than a relaxation—but it works. Deep, refreshing sleep follows.

So do nightmares. Vivid and chilling, they feature a dead woman who calls Nick by name and whispers guidance—or are they threats? And soon her voice follows him long after the song is done. As the effects of the nightmares begin to permeate his waking life, Nick makes a terrifying discovery: no one involved with Clarity has any interest in his article. Their interest is in him.

Koryta’s books have won or been nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Edgar Award, Shamus Award, Barry Award, Quill Award, International Thriller Writers Award, and the Golden Dagger. They’ve been selected as “best books of the year” by publications as diverse as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Amazon.com, O the Oprah Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, People, Reader’s Digest, iBooks, and Kirkus Reviews.

Before turning to writing full-time, Koryta worked as a private investigator, a newspaper reporter, and taught at the Indiana University School of Journalism.

His first novel, the Edgar-nominated Tonight I Said Goodbye, was accepted for publication when he was 20 years old. He wrote his first two published novels before graduating from college and was published in nearly 10 languages before he fulfilled the “writing requirement” classes required for his diploma.

Koryta was born in 1982 in Bloomington, Indiana. As a child he loved to read, and to write letters to his favorite authors. By the time he was 16, he had already decided he wanted to write crime novels. He interned for a private investigator while in high school, and went on to study Criminal Justice at Indiana University.

When not writing, Koryta enjoys spending time in the great outdoors and pursuing "the never-ending quest for the world's best micro-brew." He currently divides his time between Bloomington, Indiana and Camden, Maine, and lives with his wife and their dog and cats.
