Katy Simpson Smith Katy Simpson Smith was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. She earned her bachelors in History and Film Studies from Mount Holyoke College, followed by an MFA in Creative Writing from Bennington College Writing Seminars, and a PhD in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Smith is a writer of novels and non-fiction, both exploring the history and culture of the American South. She is an Adjunct Professor at Tulane University and lives in New Orleans.
