VJ Books Presents Author John Darnton!
John Darnton was born in New York City in 1941. Both of his parents wrote for The New York Times. He and his brother were raised by their mother after their father was killed while working as a war correspondent during WWII. Darnton was educated at the University of Wisconsin, Madison before taking up at the Times himself as a copyboy.
Darnton moved up to become a reporter a couple years later and worked in and around New York City for the 8 years following. He then became a foreign correspondent, and has worked out of Nigeria, Kenya, Spain, Poland, and the United
Kingdom, including as bureau chief in both Madrid and London. He won the George Polk Award twice for his coverage of Africa and
Eastern Europe, and in 1982 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for stories
smuggled out of Poland during martial law.
In addition to his impressive career as a journalist, Darnton has authored 5 novels and a memoir titled Almost a Family. His fictional works tend to be thrillers with historical or scientific themes.
Since his retirement from the Times Darnton has taught journalism as a visiting professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz. He is also now the curator of the George Polk Awards.
Darnton and his wife, Nina, who is also a writer live in New York City. They have three children; Kyra, Liza, and Jamie.
