VJ Books Presents Author Deborah Harkness!
 Deborah Harkness grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and has lived in western Massachusetts, the Chicago area, Northern California, upstate New York, Southern California, and studied abroad at Oxford University.
Harkness earned degrees from Mount Holyoke College, Northwestern University, and the University of California at Davis, and has been a student and scholar of history for three decades. Her research is particularly focused on the history of magic and science in Europe, especially during the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries.
Harkness has published two historical non-fiction books, as well as shorter articles and essays. She has received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the National Humanities Center. She also received accolades for her historical work from the History of Science Society, the North American Conference on British Studies, and the Longman's/History Today Prize Committee.
Harkness' career in fiction began in September 2008 with A Discovery of Witches. The book debuted at #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, and was also a bestseller in the UK, France, and Germany. She subsequently published further volumes in the same series. More than thirty-seven foreign editions and translations of the series have been published.
She is also the author of the award-winning wine blog, Good Wine Under $20. Currently, Harkness teaches European history and the history of science at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
