Dean KoontzDean Koontz was born in 1945 in Everett, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Shippensburg State College (now known as Shippensburg University). In his final year a piece of his won a fiction competition held by Atlantic Monthly, which marked the beginning of his determination to become a writer.

After graduating, Koontz became a tutor and counselor for the Appalachian Poverty Program--and spent his off-hours writing. He subsequently became an English teacher at a suburban school. During this period in his career, his wife Gerda offered to support him for up to five years so he could pursue writing for a living. He published his first novel, Star Quest in 1968, and now has published well over 100 novels, in addition short stories and screenplays. Gerda now works with him, managing the business concerns of his writing career. You can find Dean Koontz signed books below this author biography.

In his early career Koontz wrote under many different pen names including: Deanna Dwyer, K. R. Dwyer, Aaron Wolfe, David Axton, Brian Coffey, John Hill, Leigh Nichols, Owen West, Richard Paige, and Anthony North. He has also written under the name of his late dog, Trixie Koontz.

Koontz has written in many genres including science fiction, horror, and romance. He holds the distinction of being the only author to date to have seen 14 of his books on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list. Another 16 have made the paperback bestseller list.

Koontz currently lives in Southern California with Gerda and their dog Elsa.
