Charles Frazier was born in Asheville, North Carolina on November 4, 1950. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1973. He earned an M.A. from Appalachian State University in the mid-1970s, and received his Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina in 1986.
His first novel, Cold Mountain, was published in 1997. The novel won the 1997 U.S. National Book Award and was adapted as a 2003 film. Frazier's second novel, Thirteen Moons, was published in 2006. Frazier currently raises horses on a farm near Raleigh, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife, Katherine, who teaches accounting, and their daughter Annie.
