Charles Cumming is a British writer best known for his spy thriller novels. His work has been translated into fourteen languages and has been published in the UK, US, Spain, and Germany.
His latest novel, Judas 62, is the second in his gripping thriller series surrounding BOX 88 – a covert intelligence organization that operates below the radar. Lachlan Kite is a spy sent to post-Soviet Russian in the guise of a language teacher in 1993. Top secret intelligence agency BOX 88 has ordered Kite to extract a chemical weapons scientist before his groundbreaking research falls into the wrong hands. But Kite’s mission soon goes wrong and he is left stranded in a hostile city with a former KGB officer on his trail. Fast-foward to 2020, Kite is now the director of BOX 88 operations in the UK when he discovers he’s been placed on the “JUDAS” list – a record of enemies of Russia who have been targeted for assassination.
Cumming’s first novel, A Spy By Nature (2001) is a novel partly based on his experience with MI6. He was approached in 1995 for recruitment by the United Kingdom's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). The novel's hero, Alec Milius, is a flawed loner in his early 20s who is recruited by MI5 to sell doctored research data on oil exploration in the Caspian Sea to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Since then, he has written more than 10 novels including, The Hidden Man, The Spanish Game, Typhoon, and The Trinity Six. His standalone thriller The Man Between was published in the US under the title The Moroccan Girl.
His Thomas Kell series, including A Foriegn Country, A Cold War, and a Divided Spy have caught the attention of actor Colin Firth who has acquired the film rights to A Foreign Country.
Cumming is one of the trustees of The Pierce Loughran Memorial Scholarship fund which provides tuition fees for the Yeats Summer School in Sligo, Ireland. In 2008 he was a First Story writer-in-residence at Cranford Community College, London. He is also the founder and President of the Jose Raul Capablanca Memorial Chess Society.
Cumming was born in Scotland in 1971. He was educated at Eton College and the University of Edinburgh (1990-1994), where he graduated with 1st Class Honours in English Literature.
