VJ Books Presents Author Bernard Cornwell!
Bernard Cornwell OBE, is an English author and the master of the historical novel. His career began in 1981 with the publication of Sharpe’s Eagle. With 21 Sharpe novels and four short story collections, his latest novel, Sharpe’s Assassin, continues the series of the iconic hero, Richard Sharpe.
He is best known for The Last Kingdom series of books, which were made into a Netflix series in 2015 and is currently in its fourth season.
Born in London in 1944, Cornwell taught briefly after attending University College London. He joined the BBC's Nationwide and was later promoted to head of current affairs at BBC Northern Ireland. It was while working in Belfast that he met his future wife, Judy, a visiting American. He relocated to the United States in 1979, where he decided to earn a living as a writer, since it was a job that did not need a permit from the US government and he had been wanting to write the adventures of a British soldier in the Napoleonic wars.
He is a prolific historical novelist, writing two books a year for many years, only slowing to one book a year in his sixties. Cornwell has published more than 50 novels in several different series that include: The Starbuck Chronicles, The Warlord Chronicles, The Grail Quest novels, The Last Kingdom series, and close to a dozen standalone novels. He enjoys writing historical fiction because it leads people to reading the ‘real’ history – the non-fiction books.
His recent works have received advance praise and become instant bestsellers, including War Lord (2020), Sword of Kings (2019), and War of the Wolf (2018).
He continues to split his time between Cape Cod and Charleston. In June 2006, Cornwell was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's 80th Birthday Honors List.
