VJ Books Presents Author Andy Weir!
Andy Weir was born in 1972 in Davis, California. He was born to an engineer and a physicist, and spent his childhood reading classic science fiction. By age 15, Andy was working as a computer programmer. He studied computer science, for a time, at UC San Diego, but opted to continue with his career rather than the degree.
Weir started writing science fiction stories and web comics in his twenties. His short story, The Egg became a viral hit and has since been adapted on YouTube, on the stage, and even inspired a rap album. His first full-length novel, Theft of Pride was published online in 2000. His second self-published book, The Martian (2011) caught the attention of Crown Publishing and once printed, landed itself high on the New York Times Bestseller List. The Martian later became a highly successful film starring Matt Damon, and the book is known for its carefully-researched adherence to real-life science.
In 2017, Weir's third novel, Artemis was released. This was also optioned for film, but soon became lost in the details of Disney's purchase of Fox Entertainment. It's fate is unclear thus far. Weir's writing success, however, is anything but. After two decades as a computer programmer, he now writes full time, and his fourth novel, Project Hail Mary, published in May 2021, was slated to be starred in and produced by Ryan Gosling long before it even hit the shelves. Beyond novels, Weir has also written a TV pilot for CBS, and published many other short stories, including a prequel to Ready Player One which was included in the 2016 edition of the book.
Weir lives in California.
