John le Carre (1931-2020) is the master of spy fiction from his breakout 1963 novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which earned him a Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award, to his 2017 bestselling novel A Legacy of Spies.
Le Carre passed away December 12, 2020 at the age of 89, making Silverview, released October 2021, his final novel. Silverview is the mesmerizing story of an encounter between innocence and experience and between public duty and private morals. In his inimitable voice John le Carré, the greatest chronicler of our age seeks to answer the question of what we truly owe to the people we love.
Le Carre has published 26 books in over 50 countries and 40 languages. Many of his works, including The Looking Glass War (1965), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974), Smiley’s People (1979), The Little Drummer Girl (1983), The Night Manager (1993), The Tailor of Panama (1996), The Constant Gardener (2001), A Most Wanted Man (2008), and Our Kind of Traitor (2010) have been adapted for film or TV.
Le Carre established himself as an important writer of espionage fiction. In 1984 he earned the title of Mystery Writers of America Edgar Grand Master and in 1988 was awarded the Crime Writers Association Diamond Dagger Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1990, he received the Helmerich Award which is presented annually by the Tulsa Library Trust. In 2008, The Times ranked Le Carre 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". In 2011, he won the Goethe Medal, a yearly prize given by the Goethe Institute. In 2012, he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa by the University of Oxford.
Before becoming a full-time author, Le Carre taught at Eton for two years and worked for the British intelligence services MI5 and MI6 during the 1950s and 60’s. Born David John Moore Cornwell, when he began writing novels he chose the pen name John le Carre. He left MI6 to write full-time when The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, his third novel, proved a major success.
Le Carre was born in Poole, Dorset. He was educated at Sherborne School, at the University of Berne (where he studied German literature for a year) and at Lincoln College, Oxford, where he graduated with a first-class honors degree in modern languages.
